The Second Home Story

As a family, we started Second Home because we experienced the difficulty of searching for senior housing.

It was never a topic of discussion in our family because our priority was to keep our loved one at home. As time went on, we realized that the reality of staying home was going to have to change.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t keep up with the financial, emotional, and physical requirements.

So, it was time to consider senior housing.

After a stressful and time-consuming search we realized that families like ours would benefit from a personalized service. A service that would assist from start to finish and provide comprehensive solutions with compassion, education, and long-term solutions.

We receive a referral fee from one of our participating communities
that you find appropriate for your loved one.

By working with us, you’ll also be helping other families
because we donate $200 to a local non-profit that helps seniors.


Second home founder Mike Acuna headshot.My passion is helping families get through the senior housing maze and connecting them with local resources that help seniors. I started working with seniors and their families in 2013 when my mother and I started Hand in Hand Elderly Care, a Geriatric Care Management practice.

We worked with numerous seniors and their families and realized there was a need to educate families on the different types of senior care options. I found that families were completely overwhelmed and wasted time searching for facilities that often resulted in being unsuitable, inappropriate, or unaffordable.

I understand that senior housing is just one area of aging and most families need assistance with other resources. In order to provide professional guidance on other areas, I founded the Professional Alliance to Help Seniors (PATHS). PATHS is a team of local South Bay professionals in the senior care industry who are committed to solving the issues of the aging process. To date, we have started two art therapy programs for persons with Alzheimer’s, hosted three inter-generational dinners, and conducted seminars to inform and educate the local community.

I am a proud graduate of Mira Costa High School, El Camino College, and San Diego State University.

Senior housing consultant Justin Acuna headshot.I decided to join my brother and mother because I have always been drawn to helping others. As I heard the stories about what families like yours were going through I knew that I wanted to get involved.

Each day I am compelled to find personalized solutions because each family is different. I take into account all the factors that come with making this difficult decision, such as, finances, geography, and personal preferences.

Often, I find that families are very confused about this industry and what to expect. It’s my job to make this process as smooth as possible and put your mind at ease.

I look forward to finding a suitable living arrangement for you, or your family member, and I welcome any questions or concerns in order to make the transition a smooth one.

The emotional struggle and stress many families faced when searching for senior housing is something I have witnessed over my career. Second Home was started because now it was my turn.

I have personally experienced what you are going through. My family and I have had to make difficult decisions for my mother and my husband’s parents.

Evaluating all the different options was not a simple process and we became frustrated and confused by all the different amenities, services, and pricing options.

I worked with my sons to develop the assessment that we use to collect all the necessary information to start researching appropriate homes. Along with the assessment, I have trained them on senior issues, what to look for, and what type of questions to ask. By working with us, you'll be working with a family who knows what you're going through.
